This family is what I'd call an adventure family. Summers mean being outdoors and by the water as much as possible, and that's exactly where we did their portraits: at Lucky Peak Lake, on and around the jumping platform.
You don't have to do the traditional session
A lot of people assume a family portrait session has to look a certain way. Coordinated outfits, everyone lined up, posed and smiling on command. That style works great for a lot of families, and if that's what you want, I'm happy to do it.
But it's not the only option, and it wasn't the right fit for this family. So we skipped it. No outfit coordination, no forced posing. Just bathing suits, flip-flops, and a family doing what they already do together in the summer: jumping off the platform, swimming, laughing at each other.
You get to decide how you show up. Dressed up or dressed down, posed or moving, in a studio or in the place that actually means something to you. If your family has a spot they return to all summer, or all winter, that can be the session. A lake, a favorite trail, a sledding hill, your own backyard. Wherever you're already living your life is a place we can shoot.
The moment that made the session
When this mom saw her gallery, she told me: "This is truly us." She's having several of the images framed for their home. Not because they're technically perfect portraits, but because they look like an actual afternoon with her family, the kind she wants to remember.
That's the goal with sessions like this. Not to manufacture a moment, but to be there with a camera while a real one happens.
